One of the most noticeable AI advancements in gaming is how NPCs (Non-Playable Characters) interact with players. In older games, NPCs followed pre-scripted behaviors, making them easy to predict and manipulate. Modern AI, however, enables NPCs to react dynamically to the player's choices, making encounters feel more natural and challenging.
For example, in The Last of Us Part II, enemy NPCs communicate with each other, call out warnings, and react to changes in the environment. AI allows these enemies to "learn" from the player’s actions—if a player consistently hides in tall grass, AI may start searching those areas more often. Similarly, in stealth games like Alien: Isolation, the AI-controlled Xenomorph tracks the player unpredictably, forcing them to adapt rather than rely on repetitive tactics.
AI-driven companions have also become more realistic. In Red Dead Redemption 2, characters remember the player's actions and respond accordingly. The AI makes interactions feel unique, making the game world seem more alive. Smarter NPCs not only improve single-player experiences but also shape multiplayer environments, where AI-driven bots can provide a realistic challenge when real players are unavailable.
